Reuters -1,937 soldiers are currently deployed in Afghanistan, the United States, Iraq and Syria, according to Pentagon figures.
In the first quarter of 2019, an estimated 5,000 soldiers from the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are deployed to the region, with more than 6,000 troops on the ground.
That leaves the number of soldiers in the US with more to come.
The US currently has 6,400 troops in Afghanistan and about 6,300 deployed in Iraq, according the Pentagon.US President Donald Trump is expected to visit Afghanistan in the coming weeks and the deployment of troops there will be key to the strategy he is promoting to win the war against the Taliban.
Afghanistan has seen significant growth in the number and type of threats the US faces, as well as the potential for increased terrorism and drug trafficking.
The Pentagon has said it has a strategy to deter the Taliban from using Afghanistan as a base for attacks abroad, but the strategy will likely have to be expanded.
